Add & Subtract

Bigger numbers to 1000

What your child practices

Adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers by place value, number-line jumps and counting up, plus estimating by rounding to the nearest hundred.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 3.4(A) · adding and subtracting within 1,000 with place value strategies

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Line up the ones, tens and hundreds.
  2. Start with the ones, then tens, then hundreds.
  3. If a place goes over 9 when adding, regroup to the next place.

Example: 276 + 148 = ? Ones: 6 + 8 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. Answer: 424
