Join and take away

What your child practices

Small story problems where some join or some leave (totals to 10), plus finding one more and one less.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-K.OA.1; NY-K.OA.2; NY-K.OA.5 · showing and solving addition and subtraction stories within 10, and adding and subtracting within 5

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Adding puts groups together.
  2. Taking away means some go away.
  3. Count what is left or what you have in all.

Example: 3 birds sit on a branch. 2 more fly in. How many now? Start with 3. Count on 2 more: 4, 5. Answer: 5 birds
