Make 5 and 10

Fill frames to 5 and 10

What your child practices

Using 5 and 10 as anchors (fingers, five and ten frames), finding how many more make 5 or 10, and breaking numbers into two parts.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-K.OA.3; NY-K.OA.4 · breaking numbers to 10 into pairs, and finding the number that makes 10

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A ten frame has 10 boxes.
  2. Fill boxes to show a number.
  3. The empty boxes show what is missing.

Example: Show 7 on a ten frame. How many more make 10? Fill 7 boxes. 3 boxes are empty. Answer: 3

Make 5 and 10 in New York

In the New York State Learning Standards, this is unit 2 of 13 in Kindergarten Math, after Count to 10 and before Add & Take Away.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
