Sort & Count

Sort, count and compare

What your child practices

Sorting things into groups, counting each group, saying which group has more, and choosing a question we can answer by asking the class.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-K.MD.3 · sorting objects into given groups, counting each group and ordering the groups by count

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Sort things into groups that match.
  2. Count each group.
  3. The group with the most is the biggest.

Example: 3 🍎 and 5 🍌. Which has more? Count: 3 apples, 5 bananas. 5 is more than 3. Answer: 🍌

Sort & Count in New York

In the New York State Learning Standards, this is unit 11 of 13 in Kindergarten Math, after Count to 100 and before Pennies & Dimes.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
