More, Less, Same

Compare groups and balance

What your child practices

Comparing groups by matching them one to one, seeing equal as balanced and unequal as unbalanced on a scale, and reading simple picture graphs.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-K.CC.6; NY-K.CC.7 · telling whether one group has more, fewer or the same, and comparing numbers to 10

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Match things one to one.
  2. The group with extras has more.
  3. If none are left over, the groups are the same.

Example: There are 5 cats and 3 dogs. Which group has more? Match each dog to a cat. 2 cats have no match. Answer: The cats

In the New York State Learning Standards, this is unit 4 of 13 in Kindergarten Math, after Add & Take Away and before Shapes & Sizes.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
