Numbers to 20

Count, read and compare numbers

What your child practices

Counting to 20 forward and back from any number, recognizing small groups at a glance, and comparing two numbers.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-K.CC.2; NY-K.CC.3; NY-K.CC.5 · counting forward from a given number and writing a number for up to 20 objects

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Count each thing once. Do not skip any.
  2. To count on, say the next number: 14, then 15.
  3. Counting back goes the other way: 15, 14, 13.

Example: What is 1 more than 14? Count on from 14. The next number is 15. Answer: 15
